In a session at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday, Monsignor John Putzer, representing the Holy See, addressed the challenges faced by migrants.

Expressing deep concern, he emphasized the need for safe migration routes and regular pathways, urging the international community to take decisive action.

Msgr. Putzer, Chargé d'affaires of the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the UN in Geneva, highlighted the difficult choices faced by migrants.

"People on the move often find themselves with the arduous choice of taking dangerous journeys, sometimes even, 'falling victim to perilous illusions or unscrupulous traffickers.'"

Quoting Pope Francis, he reiterated the importance of respecting the dignity of each migrant and safeguarding their lives. He emphasized, "Migrants are not just numbers and statistics, but our brothers and sisters, part of the same human family with the same, God-given, dignity."

Welcome, protect, promote, integrate

Msgr. Putzer called upon states and local communities to welcome, protect, promote, and integrate migrants without distinction.

He highlighted the need for international efforts to implement the Global Compact on Migration, ensuring safe, orderly, and regular migration.

This includes expanding alternative pathways for regular migration and resettlement, improving education and working conditions in countries of origin, and addressing the holistic needs of migrants for their integral development.

He concluded his speech at the UN meeting with a reminder that the rights and dignity of migrants are the world's shared responsibility.

Msgr. Putzer urged the international community to transform rhetoric into action and create a world in which migration is marked by compassion, justice, and respect for every individual's fundamental rights and freedoms.

His appeal on behalf of the Holy See serves as a beacon of hope, igniting the collective commitment to work towards a just and inclusive global society that protects the dignity of all migrants.
