Pope Francis sends message to youth of Vietnam
By Francesca Merlo
âI join you with my heartâ, said Pope Francis when addressing the ânumerousâ young Catholics gathered to celebrate Youth Day in Vietnamâs northern Dioceses.
Pope Francis said that his message ârevolves around the word âhomeââ. A word, which, he explained, is part of the theme of this Youth Day: âGo to your home, to your familyâ (Mk 5:15).
Pope Francis went on to explain that âin the Vietnamese cultureâ, no word is as wonderful as the word âhomeâ. It includes everything that is most highly valued by a person: ânot only family and parenthood, but also birthplace and homelandâ.
Wherever you go, continued the Pope, you will take your âhomeâ with you. ââGo to your homeâ, therefore, means going on a journey that brings you back to your origins and deepens your traditional and cultural heritageâ, he said.
Pope Francis then went on to specify that, through baptism, âyou are heirs to another âhomeâ, a bigger home, the Church.â The Church is a home, he continued, adding âyour homeâ. It is a home that you will always be able to return to in order to find âstrength and inpirationâ based on Godâs call, said the Pope.
Pope Francis then recalled that the Vietnamese Church is one born of generous and enthusiastic martyrs. May these first Christians âguide youâ, he said, and may âyour gratitude towards them always be the source of a missionary enthusiasmâ.
âIt is now up to youâ, said Pope Francis, to build a âyoung and joyful Church-homeâ, full of life and fraternity. The three characteristics necessary to fulfill this task, he said, are âhonesty, responsibility and optimismâ. All three, âaccompanied by discernmentâ.
The Pope explained that in this society, âit is difficult to be faithful to one's own identity and faith without the capacity for discernmentâ.
He acknowledged that honesty may often cause disadvantages, a sense of responsibility may cause discomfort and that optimism may appear strange âin the face of the corrupt realities of societyâ. However, he added, âthese very values are what your society, and also your Church need from you.â
Finally Pope Francis urged the youth in Vietnam not to be afraid of allowing their âbeautiful Catholic identityâ to âshine forthâ, and expressed his hope that âthe Servant of God, Cardinal Van Thuanâ would give them support in loving their people and their country.
