UN: Sudan war has displaced more than 7.3 million people

Children, according to the UN refugee agency, represent about half of the displaced Sudanese population. Since the conflict erupted last year, at least 5,000 people have been killed, more than 7.3 million people displaced.

UNHCR said Sudan is now the country with the largest number of displaced people and the largest child displacement crisis in the world.

Elsewhere, the head of Sudan’s army Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has rejected the latest reconciliation efforts with his rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), vowing to continue a war with the RSF.

He said the whole world had witnessed the RSF committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in West Darfur and the rest of Sudan.

“For that reason, we have no reconciliation with them, we have no agreement with them,” he said.

Bishops urge greater efforts to end violence

Last month, in a collective statement, the Catholic Bishops in Sudan and South Sudan urged the UN, the US, the UK, and Norway - also referred to as the Troika - and other members of the international community to intensify their respective efforts to end the ongoing violence in Sudan.

Compounding matters, it is estimated the number of people in need of humanitarian assistance in Sudan has reached 25 million, a figure that amounts to more than half the population.

Sudan has been witnessing brutal armed clashes between the Sudanese army and the RSF since April 15, 2023, with the two sides accusing each other of initiating the conflict.

The United Nations has previously said the worsening situation is having a negative impact on neighboring countries, many of which are coping with their own crises.
