Airlifts to rescue foreigners from Sudan underway

France, the United States, and other nations are racing to evacuate civilian personnel from Sudan as fighting between the regular army and a paramilitary group continues.

France has begun evacuating its citizens and diplomatic staff from Sudan. A Foreign Ministry statement said a ‘rapid operation’ was underway. It said European citizens and citizens from ‘allied partner countries’ would be helped.

Earlier, the United States suspended operations at its embassy in Sudan, after American troops evacuated diplomats and their families.

Britain and European Union members are trying to pull out their diplomats and other citizens as the power struggle between rival military figures in Sudan continues.

Meanwhile, there are reports that internet connections are down, which could hamper the coordination of help for those trapped in the country.

The fighting between the regular army and the paramilitary RSF has seen heavy bombardments in the capital city, killing scores of people and injuring many others.
