At least five people have been killed in an explosion near the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

ISIS’ local affiliate, ISIS-K, claimed responsibility for the blast which marks the latest sign of a worsening security situation in the capital.

The atrocity – thought to be caused by a suicide bomb - took place in Kabul’s diplomatic district, where Turkey, India, and China have missions.

Around 40 people were admitted to hospital following the blast.

Police called the attack ‘cowardly,’ adding the culprits would be held accountable.

Rising insecurity

The UN lamented that rising insecurity was of grave concern.

This atrocity is the latest in a series of violent incidents since the Taliban took power in 2021 after the hasty US-led pullout from the country.

Last September, a deadly suicide bombing in Kabul left 23 people dead and dozens more injured. The attack took place inside the Kaaj Training Centre west of Kabul and claimed the lives of dozens of teenagers and seriously injured many others.

In 2020, teenage students were among a group of people killed in an attack claimed by the so-called Islamic State at an education centre.
