French author Alexis De Tocqueville published Democracy in America in 1835. The volume is widely considered one of the most influential texts of the 19th century.

De Tocqueville who was concerned about the possibility of democracy disintegrating into a tyranny of the majority, understood that democracy was the future, so in 1831 he came to America in order to see it in action. The volume contains his observations and reflections on the American people, their hopes and challenges, and on a shared commitment to support America’s survival as a democracy.

In this published in the Chicago Catholic, the newspaper of the Archdiocese of Chicago, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago, reviews the book highlighting the role of religion in understanding the North American political system.
