Afghanistan: attack on Save the Children office in Jalalabad

Militants attacked the offices of British aid agency Save the Children in Jalalabad, eastern Afghanistan.

A press release from the office of Save the Children Afghanistan, states that they are devastated at the news that their office in Jalalabad city, came under attack on Wednesday morning as armed men entered the building, about 9am local time. The statement continues to say that their primary concern is for the safety and security of their staff and they await further information and do not wish to comment more at this moment.

According to BBC news agency 50 staff members were in the building when the attack took place. Two people have been killed and 12 wounded.

Save the Children has worked in Afghanistan since 1976. Currently it implements programs in 16 of 34 Provinces, either directly or through partners, reaching more than 700,000 children.

In Afghanistan it works closely with the society on all levels. This organization carries out projects for the protection of children, parents, teachers, village councils, religious leaders, ministries and other national and international NGOs.
