Meet Mary in the Vatican Gardens

The Vatican Museums offers a series of Marian pilgrimages planned in the month of May in the Vatican Gardens, with the possibility of themed guided tours.

By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Throughout May, the month dedicated to the Blessed Mother, the Vatican Museums offer pilgrims and tourists a cultural, spiritual and naturalistic itinerary to discover the many images of Our Lady scattered throughout the exclusive setting of the Vatican Gardens.

Every Wednesday from 3 - 31 May, possibly even at the end of the Holy Father's weekly General Audience, and every Saturday, it will be possible to join this special Marian pilgrimage among the botanical and artistic marvels of the Pope's Gardens.

The Gardens were once a place reserved for the Popes' brief moments of rest. Today they are also open to visits by the public.

Precious opportunity

The initiative offers a precious opportunity that allows visitors to admire how, over time, the Popes have honoured Mary in this unique garden, designed as a place of prayer and contemplation.

Numerous Madonnas from all over the world dot the various nature trails, starting with the oldest, Our Lady of Lourdes - a faithful copy of the French original - to the most recent who hails from Latin America.

Appreciating Our Lady in the Vatican

The statues of Our Lady of Fatima and of Our Lady of Guadalupe, so dear to Pope Francis himself, are amongst those on view.

This type of visit is open to all, including families with children. It is recommended that children joining are at least six years old.

Guided tours - conducted in Italian or English - are fully accessible to persons with sensory, motor and intellectual disabilities.
