Pope invites faithful to visit Our Lady in a Marian shrine and to remember Ukraine

On the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Pope Francis invites the faithful to visit a Marian shrine to venerate Our Lady on her Feast Day, and invokes peace for the war in Ukraine.

This Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Pope Francis has invited faithful to visit a Marian shrine.

On Monday, as the Church observes the 15 August Solemnity, the Holy Father gave this encouragement to the some 10,000 faithful and pilgrims gathered in St. Peter's Square, following his Angelus address.

"On this day dedicated to Our Lady," the Pope said, "I urge all who have the opportunity to visit a Marian shrine to venerate our heavenly Mother."

The Bishop of Rome remembered that many Romans and pilgrims go to St Mary Major to pray before the Salus Populi Romani, and recalled that the Marian Basilica is also home to the statue of the Virgin Queen of Peace, placed there by Pope Benedict XV.

“Let us continue to invoke Our Lady's intercession so that God may grant peace to the world, and let us pray in particular for the Ukrainian people.”

Happy Feast to all, away or home, and especially the lonely and sick

The Holy Father greeted all the Romans and pilgrims from various countries.

“I wish a Happy Feast of the Assumption to all of you here present, to those who are on holiday, as well as to many who cannot afford a period of relaxation, and to the lonely and the sick. Let us not forget them.”

Thanks for those providing indispensable services for community

The Holy Father also gave special words of thanks to those who in these hot August days continue "to provide indispensable services for the community."

"Thank you for your work for us!"

Pope Francis concluded by wishing a happy Solemnity, a good lunch, and reminding them to pray for him.
