Syrian refugees inspired by meeting with Pope Francis

Pope Francis receives a group of young Syrian refugees who presented him with the gift of a T-shirt with an image and words representing their hope and trust in God.

On Monday morning, the last day of his 35th Apostolic journey abroad, Pope Francis received nine young Syrian Christians in the Apostolic Nunciature in Athens.

The young people, who are refugees, are being hosted by the Armenian Catholic Ordinariate in Athens, which provides support for them as they continue on their path of integration into society, in line with Pope Francis’ call to "Welcome, Protect, Promote and Integrate" migrants and refugees.

During the meeting, the Holy Father was touched by the stories of the young Syrians, said a statement of the Armenian Catholic Ordinariate. He then blessed them and encouraged them to go on with their lives with firm faith and trust in Our Lord.

The young people, in turn, presented the Pope with the gift of a T-shirt with the image of Christ holding Peter’s hand to save him from drowning. The shirt also had an inscription in Italian which, translated into English reads:

“Jesus, I believe in you. The hand of God has saved us. Thank you, Holy Father, you are the hand of the Lord."
