In a letter of thanks and esteem for years of quality work at the head of the Vatican’s “Osservatore Romano” newspaper, Pope Francis sent his greetings and thanks to Prof. Giovanni Maria Vian saying that he knows he will be able to continue to avail himself of his support and advice.

Prof. Vian, who has recently retired, was Editor-in-Chief of the “Osservatore Romano” since 2007. Last week Pope Francis appointed Andrea Monda as his replacement.

In his letter, the Pope recalled that Prof. Vian was appointed to serve the Holy See publication by Pope Benedict XVI, and said he has done so “with competence”, “qualified professionalism”, “exemplary adherence to the Magisterium” and “consistent Christian commitment”.

In particular the Pope thanked him for “the precious collaboration and constant availability” Vian has always demonstrated in his efforts to promote the implementation of the reforms called for by Francis – especially in the area of communication.

The Pope also mentioned his knowledge and experience as a scholar of Church History and as a Professor of Patristic Philology saying he has made a “valuable contribution to improving the quality of information and giving ample space to those voices that deserve careful listening in the ecclesial community”.

Pope Francis concluded his letter wishing every good and prosperity to Prof. Vian, invoking the grace and consolation of the Lord on all who are dear to him, and entrusting him to the special protection and intercession of the Most Holy Immaculate Virgin and of the Apostles Peter and Paul.
