Pope Francis concludes Apostolic Journey to Ireland

The curtain has come down on this World Meeting of Families in Dublin and the baton has now been passed to the city of Rome. Lydia O'Kane shares her final thoughts on the Apostolic Journey to Ireland.

Pope Francis came to Ireland for this the World Meeting of Families to pray for the families of the world - and in Knock he did just that, and his silent prayer in the Chapel of Apparition said more than a thousand words.

Testimonies of Faith

Who could forget the thrilling evening in Croke Park where families really did proclaim the Joy of the Gospel through their testimonies, talents and faith.

A Papal Visit in all its facets

But this was a visit which also focused on the pain and suffering as a result of the sexual abuse crisis that has rocked the Catholic Church here. The Pope in his words at Dublin Castle, at Knock, and again at the closing Mass in the Phoenix Park asked for “forgiveness for these sins”, as he called them.

Many people here are hoping that this Papal journey will pave the way for a spiritual renewal in this land; but they also know it will take time.

That hope, however, is also to be found in the families of Ireland and the world, who shone a light on the faith during this meeting and are passing that Joy of the Gospel on to the next generation.
