Indian bishops expresse solidarity with Ockhi cyclone victims

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) has issued a statement to show solidarity with the suffering victims of Ockhi cyclone that has created havoc in Southern India.

The Catholic Bishops of India on Monday expressed its solidarity with the suffering victims of Ockhi cyclone which has caused extensive damage and resulted in deaths.

“We offer our condolences to the families of all those who have lost their lives and we wish to comfort those who have been afflicted by pain and suffering caused by the devastating hurricane in the past few days,”  the statement signed by the Secretary General of CBCI Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas reads.

It further states that as on Monday around 26 persons are reported dead and over 150 fishermen are said to be missing. Over 560 houses are known to be totally damaged and more than 1,500 houses partially damaged. Approximately 10,000 people are evacuated.

The CBCI has called the Church in India to offer special prayers during Sunday Mass on the 10th of December.  Those willing to offer financial and material support are encouraged to get in touch with the Dioceses of the coastal regions of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. 

Caritas India, the Catholic Church’s wing of mercy is working along with the Government authorities to provide relief to the people.

Ockhi, which in Bengali means 'eye', is a cyclonic storm which has battered parts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep islands. (CBCI)
